SEO audit checklist: practical steps to run an audit

An SEO audit checklist for a small business starts with money: whether the website records calls, enquiries and sales, and whether the pages that sell are indexed. Technical health, content and links come after that, followed by the Google Business Profile for a service business, Merchant Center and filter pages for an e-shop, and access for AI crawlers. The free SEO audit checklist template lists every check below in the same order, with an "applies to" column for service businesses and e-shops.

What is an SEO audit checklist?

An SEO audit checklist is a working list of checks for an SEO audit: a systematic study of a website's strengths and weaknesses that can be handed to the business's own specialist team. Each check tests whether the site can be found and indexed in Google Search and AI answers, and whether the business can see the calls, enquiries and sales that search brings.

SEO audit checklist: 8 steps and 24 checks

The checks run in order of how directly they affect calls, enquiries and sales: tracking and the indexation of the pages that sell come first, AI visibility and prioritisation last.

  1. Tracking

    • Why it matters
A key event measures an action that is particularly important to the success of the business; without it the enquiries that search brings in stay invisible.
      How to verify
GA4: the events marked as key events. An enquiry event has to be created and marked as a key event.
    • Why it matters
GA4 marks purchase as a key event by default, so the question is not the setting but the data: revenue only shows when the purchase event carries its value and currency, and GA4 removes duplicate purchases only when they share the same transaction ID.
      How to verify
Place a test order and check in GA4 that the purchase shows with the right value, currency and transaction ID, then compare GA4 revenue with the shop's revenue for the same period.
    • Why it matters
In one WooCommerce shop the purchase event fired three times per order, so GA4 showed roughly twice as many orders as there really were.
      How to verify
Compare GA4 purchases with the orders in the shop system for the same period.
    • Why it matters
One GA4 property mixed seven domains and a developer's computer, so the report showed enquiries falling while on the real site they were rising.
      How to verify
Compare GA4 key events with the business's own enquiry records for the same period.
    • Why it matters
GA4 misses some orders when the visitor declines cookies or does not return from the payment provider.
      How to verify
Compare GA4 purchases with shop orders; the gap is expected, not a tracking error.
  2. Indexation of the pages that sell

    • Why it matters
All important pages should be indexed.
      How to verify
      Search Console: Page indexing report.
    • Why it matters
Pages without internal links are hard to find for visitors and for Google; the pages that earn the most belong in the top navigation.
      How to verify
Check the top menu and the Search Console Links report for the selling pages.
    • Why it matters
The URL Inspection tool shows a page's index status and a screenshot of how Google sees it.
      How to verify
      Search Console: URL Inspection tool.
    • Why it matters
An expected robots.txt rule, a noindex tag or a duplicate URL is a legitimate reason not to be indexed.
      How to verify
Search Console: Page indexing report, reasons why pages aren't indexed.
      Note
Google notes a site with fewer than 500 pages probably doesn't need the report.
  3. Technical health

    • Why it matters
robots.txt tells crawlers which URLs they can access on the site.
      How to verify
      Search Console: robots.txt report.
    • Why it matters
One piece of content, one URL: duplicates of the same content are not indexed.
      How to verify
Search Console: Page indexing report (duplicate URLs).
    • Why it matters
Search Console reports pages that are not served over HTTPS.
      How to verify
      Search Console: HTTPS report.
    • Why it matters
Core Web Vitals scores are not worth chasing for their own sake: what matters is that a person feels the site loads quickly. Google shows the most relevant content even when page experience is sub-par.
      How to verify
Open the key pages on a phone and judge whether they load quickly; use PageSpeed Insights only to find what slows a slow page.
  4. Content

    • Why it matters
A product page ranking instead of a service page is a mismatch.
      How to verify
Search Console: Performance report (queries and pages).
    • Why it matters
Every page needs distinct title text that describes its content.
      How to verify
The title element of each page.
  5. Links

    • Why it matters
The Search Console Links report shows which pages get the most internal links, so the audit can see whether the pages that matter most get the most emphasis and whether important pages are short of internal links.
      How to verify
Search Console: Links report, cross-checked with GA4 revenue and business logic.
    • Why it matters
Comparing keyword counts, rankings and backlink counts with direct competitors shows the opportunities and where the current site stands.
      How to verify
      Ahrefs.
  6. Local and e-shop checks

    • Why it matters
Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity.
      How to verify
      Google Business Profile.
    • Why it matters
Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity.
      How to verify
Google Business Profile: business information and category.
    • Why it matters
Google's guidance on faceted navigation: filter URLs not needed in Search can be kept out of crawling.
      How to verify
      robots.txt; Search Console: robots.txt report.
    • Why it matters
Merchant Center asks for price and availability that match the landing page.
      How to verify
      Merchant Center product data.
  7. AI visibility

    • Why it matters
IV.lt shared hosting ModSecurity rules block ClaudeBot, GPTBot and ChatGPT-User by default; a Hostinger server returned a 429 error to GPTBot on one site; a Cloudflare rule showed every AI bot a 403 block page on another.
      How to verify
Request a page with the bot's real user agent and a unique query string, because cached pages hide the block.
    • Why it matters
In one audit the ChatGPT interface named the business in 13 of 26 answers, the ChatGPT API in 5 of 26.
      How to verify
Ask the same buyer questions on each AI platform separately.
  8. Priorities for quick results

    • Why it matters
Checking the state of existing pages sets what to update first and where to get backlinks, the work with the biggest impact.
      How to verify
Search Console (pages with impressions in positions 8–20), GA4 revenue, and the Google Ads search terms report (terms that already bring enquiries).
      Note
Needs Search Console and GA4 access and the Google Ads search terms report.

01

How do you check whether pages are indexed in an SEO audit?

In an SEO audit, indexing is checked in Search Console's Page indexing report, which shows the indexing status of all URLs Google knows about in the property and why pages aren't indexed. For one page, the URL Inspection tool shows its index status and a screenshot of how Google sees it. An expected robots.txt rule, a noindex tag or a duplicate URL is a legitimate reason not to be indexed. Google notes that a site with fewer than 500 pages probably doesn't need the report. The quickest check for a single page is a Google search for site: followed by the page address: if the page shows up, it is indexed.

02

Do Core Web Vitals scores matter in an SEO audit?

Not much: Core Web Vitals scores matter less in an SEO audit than is often claimed, because what matters most is that a person feels the site loads quickly. Google states that Search always seeks to show the most relevant content, even if the page experience is sub-par. So an audit fixes a slow page when it is slow for people, not to move a single score.

03

How do you check that enquiries and sales are tracked correctly for an SEO audit?

For an SEO audit, tracking is checked by comparing GA4 with the business's own records, because GA4 can be wrong in both directions. In one WooCommerce shop the GA4 purchase event fired three times per order, so GA4 showed roughly twice as many orders as there really were. One GA4 property mixed seven domains and a developer's computer, so the report showed enquiries falling while they were rising on the real site. GA4 also misses some orders when the visitor declines cookies or does not return from the payment provider.

04

What is the difference between a technical SEO audit and a full SEO audit?

A technical SEO audit and a full SEO audit differ in scope: the technical audit covers site speed, indexing and page structure, plus duplicate control for large catalogues. A full SEO audit adds demand analysis by keyword group and seasonality, a comparison with competitors, the live Google results and visibility in AI answers.

05

Which tools do you need for an SEO audit?

An SEO audit needs Google Search Console for indexing, queries and links, GA4 for key events, and PageSpeed Insights to diagnose slow pages. An e-shop adds Merchant Center, and a service business with a location adds its Google Business Profile. For the competitor and demand comparison, the seopaslaugos.io mini audit uses Ahrefs and Google Ads Keyword Planner.

06

Can ChatGPT do an SEO audit?

No, ChatGPT cannot do a full SEO audit, because the tracking and indexing checks rest on private data. Search Console shows sensitive Google Search information only to verified site owners and to users an owner has granted access to, and in GA4 only an administrator can add users. On some hosts ChatGPT cannot even open the pages, as on IV.lt shared hosting, where ModSecurity rules stop ChatGPT-User.

07

How long does an SEO audit take?

An SEO audit from seopaslaugos.io takes 1–2 business days: seopaslaugos.io delivers the free mini audit and the SEO proposal within that time. No separate audit is needed before work starts, because the situation analysis and the AI visibility audit are part of the proposal.

08

How do you prioritise SEO audit findings?

SEO audit findings are prioritised by how directly a fix affects calls, enquiries and sales: the audit checks the state of existing pages and decides what to update first and where to get backlinks. Quick wins need Search Console and GA4 access and the Google Ads search terms report: with them in place, the first week of seopaslaugos.io work selects pages that already have impressions and sit in positions 8–20, and search terms that already bring enquiries in Ads campaigns. A one-off SEO consultation ends with a written priorities plan that sets which work comes first.

09

Can someone do the SEO audit for you?

Yes, seopaslaugos.io runs a free SEO mini audit that the client receives together with the SEO proposal, and Mantas Tamošaitis carries it out. The mini audit compares key metrics with 3–5 competitors, checks which page Google shows for each query and runs an AI visibility audit with real buyer questions chosen for the business, without needing Search Console, GA4 or Google Ads access. A real, anonymised SEO audit report example shows what comes back. The free SEO audit page explains how to request it.
